The Cathedral was the Established Church of the land under the control of the State which endowed it with £400 annually. The Rector’s salary was paid by the Government just as the Superintendent and the Treasurer of the Settlement were paid. It was not until 1872, when an ordinance was passed to disestablish and disendow the Church, that the administration was no longer the prerogative of the Government. Independence, therefore, was granted to the Church over 100 years ago.
